How to Avoid Your College Finals Week Hell
Finals week, or what is sometimes called hell week on college campuses is looming above your head, and you are wondering what it is you can do to make your life easier. With parents, teachers and even some of your peers stressing over this time of year, you have decided to take the route of least resistance by finding ways to cope with this daunting week that has everyone else unnerved. Well, you have come to the right place. We have compiled what we believe is the best ways to keep hell week from giving you hell.
- Preparation is Key
You have heard this all your life, so why is it that there are so many people that are unprepared for finals. Why are they so stressed out? The answer is procrastination. You may have been prepared for your classes, and tests, but you put off the things needed for your finals, like example papers from lord of papers paper writing services. You do not want to be running around looking for quality help at the last minute. There are millions of other students that are doing the same thing, so if you know you will need a good outline to study from, get it in January, not April.
- Join a study group
There is strength in numbers. You will not be easily distracted if you are in a group that is focused on getting good grades during finals week. When you are alone in your dorm room at your computer, it is so easy to veer off course from what you need to be doing, and that is studying the work. Get in study groups early in the semester, or form your own. Look around the cafeteria for that lone student that has books piled up around their french-fries, that is a person that needs help.
- Make an appointment with your Professor
Do this after mid-terms. This is the time that Professors look to see students to give them a heads up on what they should be working on. Visit them to see if there is any extra credit that you can work on to add to your grade and a detailed list of what is proposed to be in the final.
Getting to know your professor is one of the best ways to relieve hell week stress. They know what you are going through and will help you in any way they can.
- Create Mock Exams-
Using the outline of what is going to be in the final, create your own mock exams; if essays are included, write short essays every day so that you get into the habit of writing. The essay portion of an English exam is usually the longest. If you are used to writing every day, it is not as daunting to you when the final exam is placed in front of you.
If it is a math final, create problems according to the type of math you are taking. There are websites with full sheets of math questions that are free to use. Test yourself and your friends. Math is an exact science, and once you learn the formulas you should do well.
Flash cards are easy to make out of 3 x 5 cards. For Psychology, Biology, and classes that are fact heavy, make up these cards in different colors to coincide with different chapters in the book. When you associate answers to the certain chapters and color your mind will automatically recall the information has been studied. For these types of classes 2 hours of study per hour of class is the recipe for success.
- Pay attention to your physical well-being
Eating the right foods on a college campus may sound crazy, but there are options there that are good for you besides pizza and wings. Look for the fruit and yogurt. Keep your body fueled properly and your mind will follow.
You need to get enough sleep during the weeks leading up to your finals, not just during finals week. The parties that you want to attend will be there after graduation. This is not to say that you should not have any fun, but doing it in the extreme is why so many college students burn out and fail.
Put your blinders on to too much partying, and if you have friends that are pushing you to leave your books and come out with them, do it now and then, but use that little word that is so hard to conjure up, “no”.
Use music to soothe your body and mind. Go to YouTube and type in classical music. A number of hits these videos get is phenomenal, and if you read the comments section you will notice that these are written by mostly students that are glorifying the use of classical music to help them study.
- Keep your calendar clear, and if possible tell your boss you need the week off.
This is the week that will determine your final grades, and if you have not been doing well the rest of the semester, you need to make sure that these exams are the best you can give.
If you give your boss enough time to get someone else to cover for you, most of them will be glad to help you at this time. There are so many people that are rooting for your success. Let them all know that this is finals week, and anyway they can help you focus is welcomed.
Copy these suggestions and hand them on the wall over your computer for reference. We hope that they will help you during this time, and good luck with your finals! Come back and let us know how you did!
